A Manager’s Guide to Motivating Work From Home Employees

Manager Motivating Employees

Remote working is a trend that has become popular recently, especially after the covid-19 pandemic hit the world, affecting the normal operations of many companies. With the pandemic, among safety measures introduced to minimize the spread of the various were social distancing that called for lockdown, hence the rise of remote working.

This made it challenging for those who are on board with this change to adapt to it but also made it more productive and fruitful for them. With remote working being so prevalent now, you should know how to motivate your work-from-home employees so they can be effective in their daily tasks and have their jobs done well. Below is a guide for managers to help them motivate their work from home workers:

1. Set The Right Expectations

One thing that seems to get lost in all of this discussion about remote work is setting expectations for the team member’s performance during an online work environment. It may seem like a huge task for you and the other manager assigned to the team but what I’ve noticed through my experience as a manager is that if everyone sets clear expectations beforehand, then things run smoother when the work arrives. This includes both sides – the managers need to set realistic expectations, and the team members need to understand what the job entails.

2. Give Feedback Regularly

You don’t want to let your employees go without giving them feedback on their work. If they aren’t getting feedback on what is expected, they won’t come back motivated and productive next week. Even though you’re not able to discuss everything face to face, you can still make sure that you give feedback by text message, email, or video chat.

3. Organize Virtual Motivational Sessions

Sometimes your team needs something external to push them during the day. Whether it’s just inspiration from one of your colleagues, a motivational speaker, or maybe a video game, having some sort of outside source can really help. During these sessions, you can encourage your entire team to collaborate on goals and dreams. These motivational sessions may require some planning ahead of time and shouldn’t be used every single day. They should only be scheduled once per month or so.

4. Provide Concrete Goals To Your Team

Your employees need to know where you expect them to be heading in the future. When they can see your vision for them, they can align themselves around that goal. When you communicate to your team what you plan to do for them, it’ll instill a sense of ownership because they’ll start to realize that they too have a role in achieving success together. Make sure that your goals are tangible and measurable.

5. Reward Hardworking Employees

The best way to incentivize hard work is to recognize each individual on your team. One strategy to achieve this would be to issue bonuses based on how much certain projects were completed within specified deadlines. While this sounds great, there are definitely pitfalls with rewarding people in this manner. It could turn into a conflict of interest since you’d want to promote yourself and your team first. Instead, consider creating a “Best Performer Award,” which would award recognition to someone who consistently exceeds expectations throughout the year. Not only does this reward your most dedicated workers, but it also establishes standards for your whole organization.
